Sintered Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) magnets offer the highest energy per unit volume of any permanent magnet material, mostly an iron based alloy. It is manufactured in numerous energy and temperature grades, with high energy range from 33MGOe to 48MGOe with wonderful coercive force, even 50MGOe in the laboratory. Being less prone to chipping during handling, and has lower temperature coefficient of magnetic properties than Ceramic magnets, higher than SmCo type rare earth magnets, but less expensive, and mechanically stronger and less brittle than SmCo. However, being mostly an iron based alloy, NdFeB type rare earth magnet is much more prone to surface oxidation or rust. To eliminate such a problem, the user should consider magnet coating, plating, or suitable surface treatment. So for most applications, coating or plating is recommended.
