A new product introduced by magnetic toy manufacturer Nano Magnetics could connect electronics together in a way that is similar to stacking toy blocks. Known as Nanoport, this innovative technology uses neodymium magnets to allow devices to be magnetically attached side by side or positioned on top of each other, according to CNET. With this magnetic functionality, devices that work with Nanoport can act as accessories for other devices. This device also improves communication and data transferring between mobile devices without requiring users to connect them with cables.
"The Nanoport is the culmination of our last three years of magnet constructor [research and development]," said Tim Szeto, founder and chief executive officer of Nano Magnetics, in a statement. "It effectively turns electronics into building blocks that can be combined to create new devices, then later collapsed for transport."
The Canada-based firm announced the Nanoport device at the Consumer Electronics Show, Techvibes reported.
Nano Magnetics plans to attract smartphone manufacturers with their magnetic technology and license Nanoport to them. With the help of the rare earth magnets used in Nanoport, smartphone users can transform their devices into different configurations, turning two smartphone screens into a larger screen for improved media viewing.
Changing communication between mobile devices
While users may be concerned about compatibility issues when trying to connect devices made by different manufacturers, CNET notes that devices with built-in Nanoport components could help overcome this problem. Users may also have to ensure that the magnets are aligned appropriately in order to help devices connect.
The wireless mechanisms that are included with Nanoport also increase the number of ways users can communicate and function in relation to other devices. With this system for wireless communications, users can operate their phones with battery boosters for easy charging or connect their mobile device with an external storage system to transfer data seamlessly.
"Nanoport gives hardware and software developers new methods of device engagement," Szeto said. "Traditional connectivity technology allows software to work together. Now hardware can enjoy such a cooperation too."
Nanoport technology can also be incorporated into devices to operate with cars. When made with electromagnets, permanent magnets. Nanoport-enabled smartphones can be hooked onto car dashboards and let users communicate with their devices hands-free, which is a safer way to drive as some states are imposing more regulations regarding cellphone use while driving a car.
